A Genetic Overview of the Pug Dog
The 2021 PDCA National Health Seminar, “A Genetic Overview of the Pug Dog”, will be presented by Dr. Jerold S. Bell, DVM. Dr. Bell has spoken to over 75 parent breed clubs in recent years, and will provide a pug dog specific review of breed genetic management. The material includes registration statistics, and analysis of the pug pedigree database, including influential foundation sires and dams. He will discuss genetic diversity, how selection and types of matings manipulate the genes of the ancestors in the pedigree, and popular sire syndrome. Genetic disorders affecting the pug, with updates from current investigators and the OFA Pug Dog Health Survey will be analyzed in relation to current data. Types of genetic tests, their availability, and proper use will include breeding recommendations to manage different inherited disorders.
