Health Testing, CHIC Testing, and Supported Research

The Pug Dog Club of America supports the CHIC registry (Canine Health Information Center) and recommends all dogs used for breeding and exhibition be screened for health issues.
To that end, the Pug Dog Club of America recommends the following tests:
  • Hip Dysplasia - OFA Evaluation
  • Patellar Luxation - OFA Evaluation
  • OFA or CERF Eye Examination - annually by a boarded ACVO Ophthalmologist. Click here to find a board certified ACVO Opthalmologist
  • Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE)  - DNA test for Necrotizing Meningoencephalitis
  • Elbow Dysplasia (Optional) - OFA Evaluation
  • Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKD) (Optional)  - DNA based PKD test results from an approved lab
  • Serum Bile Acid Test (Optional) - PDCA recommends Bile Acid testing for puppies. Typically a 1-2 hour post-prandial Bile Acid is run at 9-10 weeks of age. If it is elevated, then a repeat test is performed using both fasting and post-prandial samples.
*Note – In addition to the breed specific requirements above, a CHIC requirement across all participating breeds is that the dog must be permanently identified via microchip or tattoo in order to qualify for a CHIC number.

Pug Health Research Projects Update:  Research projects (on tab below) are those which the PDCA has elected to support monetarily through health fund donations. The following information comes from brief update reports to the PDCA from each individual study. Studies are subsidized through grants from the AKC Canine Health Foundation, the Morris Animal Foundation, and others, as noted.
