Pug Health (CHIC & OFA) Testing

The Pug Dog Club of America supports the CHIC registry (Canine Health Information Center) and recommends all dogs used for breeding and exhibition be screened for health issues listed below.
The Pug Dog Club of America recommends the following tests on PUG PARENTS:
  • Hip Dysplasia - OFA Evaluation
  • Luxating Patellas- OFA Evaluation
  • OFA or CERF Eye Examination - annually by a boarded ACVO Ophthalmologist.  Find an ACVO Ophthalmologist.  A few things they are looking for    are Dry Eye, Dystichia, Entropion, and Proptosis
  • Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE)   DNA test for RISK of Necrotizing Meningoencephalitis    NOTE: According to UC  Davis,   www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/PDE.php , there is NO DIAGNOSTIC TEST FOR PDE OR NME in dogs.  There is only a test is only to determine RISK for developing PDE/NME in Pug Dogs and for selecting matings that will produce puppies that are at decreased risk (N/N, N/S).
  • Elbow Dysplasia (Optional) - OFA Evaluation
  • Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKD) (Optional)  - DNA based PKD test results from an approved lab
  • Serum Bile Acid Test (Optional) - PDCA recommends Bile Acid testing for puppies. Typically a 1-2 hour post-prandial Bile Acid is run at 9-10 weeks of age. If it is elevated, then a repeat test is performed using both fasting and post-prandial samples.
*Note – In addition to the breed specific requirements above, a CHIC requirement across all participating breeds is that the dog must be permanently identified via microchip or tattoo in order to qualify for a CHIC number.
